The Bundesliga weekend comes to a close on Sunday, 6 April 2025, with the floodlit clash between the men's teams of 1. FC Union Berlin and VfL Wolfsburg. Kick off in the Stadion An der Alten Försterei is at 17:30.

The lie of the land

Union are going into the game against die Wölfe on the back of some strong results. Head coach Steffen Baumgart's team have remained unbeaten in the Bundesliga since matchday 24. The team have exhibited their comeback qualities recently. Both in Frankfurt and in Freiburg away, as well as against FC Bayern at home, Union have come back from being a goal down, taking seven points from the three tough encounters.

The form curve for the opponents looks somewhat different. VfL Wolfsburg are travelling to Berlin-Köpenick after two consecutive defeats. Ralph Hasenhüttl's team were beaten 1-0 both by FC Augsburg as well as at home against 1. FC Heidenheim. Prior to that, however, Wolfsburg went unbeaten in seven league games in a row – proof that the green-and-whites are still a force to be reckoned with.

The opponents

Wolfsburg head coach Hasenhüttl has only positive memories of games against Union. In eight meetings – in the Bundesliga, 2. Bundesliga and 3. Bundesliga – the Austrian has remained unbeaten (four wins, four draws). But while Hasenhüttl's personal record appears flawless, his club's statistics tell a different story. VfL's have never won at the Alte Försterei. What's more, Sunday’s guests haven’t scored in their last three games in Köpenick.

Mohamed Amoura is one of the players on whom the Lower Saxony side are pinning their hopes. The 24-year-old Algerian, currently on loan from Belgian first division club Union Royale Saint-Gilloise, is by far the most dangerous attacking player in the Wolfsburg squad, with ten goals and the same number of assists. He missed the most recent game against Heidenheim through suspension, but he is expected to return to the starting eleven against Union.

The head to head

Union and VfL Wolfsburg have met 14 times so far. Union have won four of these, with the sides drawing three times. The first match played this season went the way of Wolfsburg with a 1-0 win –their seventh win against Union.

The reunions

Union's head coach Steffen Baumgart played for VfL Wolfsburg in 32 Bundesliga matches between 1998 and 1999, scoring five goals. Jerome Roussillon wore the green and white shirt from 2018 to 2023, while goalkeeper Carl Klaus played for the U19 and second teams of VfL between 2012 and 2015. On the other side, Kevin Behrens, who played a total of 105 competitive games for Union between 2021 and 2024, will face his former team.

The personnel

On the hosts' side, Steffen Baumgart will continue to be without Aljoscha Kemlein, Robert Skov and Wooyeong Jeong, who are all out with injuries.

Pre-match comments

“Wolfsburg have a lot of quality, especially in attack – a team with high individual class that can definitely still play for European places this season,” was Steffen Baumgart’s assessment of his side’s challenge on Sunday. “Nevertheless, we are fully focused on our own plan, trust our processes and want to work hard to get the bit that we need to win our home game.”

Ralph Hasenhüttl, meanwhile had this to say during his own press conference on Friday “Union have a very direct approach going forward. It's clear from the coach that they're not taking too many risks and want to get into the opposition's half very quickly. They do that very well. They're very aggressive and energetic when they have the ball.”

As usual, the Stadion An der Alten Försterei opens two hours before kick-off; tickets for the home and guest areas are sold out.

There are still extensive traffic disruptions to the public transport system, and it is only possible to travel via the tram lines through the old town of Köpenick using the rail replacement service. All visitors are therefore advised to arrive early.
